This service is available to subscribers. The service is performed by the SPIB staff who have developed and demonstrated their expertise in good sawmilling practices. The service involves a thorough survey of log length cutting, sawing for grade, and edge-trimming practices to maximize recovery of grade and volume. Log lengths are measured for proper over-length tolerance.

Rough-green lumber sizes are measured and correlated to mill's target sizes. When necessary, size changes are suggested to avoid grade loss from scant lumber. Dressed lumber inspected to evaluate loss from sawmill manufacture and the results of the survey are discussed with mill management following the survey. A report is then issued giving all the data and a summary of the survey.
