Dry kiln consulting service is available to subscribers. The service is performed by SPIB staff who have developed and demonstrated their expertise in dry kilns. The service involves a thorough check of the mill's drying program from green stacking through the kiln and a check of the condition of the lumber following the kiln schedule.

A check of the temperature and air velocity through the stacks is made independently of the kiln's instruments and recommendations are made concerning mechanical aspects of the kiln such as calibration of controls, vent operation, fans, steam leaks, and distribution of heat within the kiln.

The findings of the survey are discussed with mill management. A report is issued summarizing the work and giving data developed from the survey of the kilns. A classroom presentation is made when requested. This includes a study of SPIB's Dry Kiln Manual and slide presentation.
